There were many more of our friends of South Vietnam who were killed by the Viet Cong. Our defense of them I believe was a worthy cause, but I think our approach was not an effective use of American lives. Going on patrol to act as targets was ineffective. I also believe the draft brought in many soldiers who weakened the morale and our will. My point was that the US may have been right, but the mission was not clear. Apparently, you feel the lives of South Vietnamese or Iraqis under Hussian are worth less than our lives. Since you like many have had no answer in how to help them. Also keep in mind that over 2400 US soldiers were killed in Omaha Beach in one day. Was that cause worth that military mistake? I think so, but losing a handful in Somalia broke the US will, and I believe was a worthy cause as well (along with Democrat Clintons missions in Haiti, Bosnia, Kosovo.) I was born in 1956, and was not elligible for the draft. I don't believe in a draft for combat, but I would be perfectly willing to leave all these decisions up to those in the military or those who had combat experience. I know having taught a computer course to many Navy Seal trainees, that not one ever disagreed with those accessments. Actually I got many of my views from ex-military personel, though I know there are those who were drafted take your view. However, over and over again, I heard, "I wish people like Jane Fonda would butt out." Many I met have a passion for war, and I am glad we have them, and we all need to treat them right. |
