The federal government really has been tightening up privacy standards. Fairfax Circuit Court is now actually keeping case files that have been sealed in a separate part of the file room and the files are reviewed before being released, which is a big change. They will pull out the sealed records before they give the file to you.

It's up to the attorney to make sure the records are sealed.

Bankruptcy cases no longer publish the debtor's full Social Security No. or the full account numbers for credit cards -- the SS is in the court file but not available to the public, and the full account numbers are not supposed to even be in the court files, just last four digits.

But divorce files still have the Socials, this is for alimony and child support but even in cases where there is no alimony or child support they still put the Socials. So that's available for scammers still.
