I do not know what happened near the border of Cambodia. Swift boats apparently were in that region. When you need to get men and equipment up river, a swift boat would be a good choice because of the displacement, armaments and speed. The final deployment into Cambodia might have been by smaller boats.

As for selecting Kerry as a skipper, by many accounts he was one of the best drivers of the swift boats. Not only that, but he had learned how to speak Vietnamese. These are skills that made him more than qualified to participate in those operations.
