I think you're right about that.
The Democrats, as well as the 527's
supporting them, lead off with nastiness
during the primary season. McAufliffe himself
engaged in questioning Bush's service and
calling him AWOL.

If they weren't so arrogant, they would
have realized that the swiftvets assault was
coming and could have legs. It had been signaled
for a long time before the DNC convention.

Regardless, they made the decision to
focus on Kerry's military service.

Now they're crying foul because they haven't been
able to selectively repeal the First Amendment.

Do I necessarily care about what really happened
during Kerry's abbreviated combat duty? No.

Do I think he embellished it? Sure.

Do I think the swiftvets had a right
to express their opinions. Yes.

What was the effect?

While it has kept the campaign in the gutter
where the Dems initially placed it, the swiftvets
did force the Kerry camp to make some damaging
admissions which proved that he embellished his record.
This, in turn, diminished Kerry except in the eyes
of his diehard supporters who will put words into
his mouth and parse the meaning of "is" on his
behalf until the cows come home.

Beyond Kerry's admissions and the mere fact that questions were raised,
I doubt we'll ever really resolve the
remaining disputed facts. It's probably the
beating of a dead horse at this point.

The more recent focus on Kerry's anti-war activities
may be a different story. It was those actions that
initially turned me off to Kerry when I researched about
him last year. He struck me as an opportunist then,
and still does now.
