On Brit Hume just now the Capital Gang said that accusing Bush of "slime" and "smear" no matter what he does or anybody else does was something that Kerry's focus groups came up with this spring.

Those words, "smear" and "slime" tested well with focus groups. And swing voters tend not to like negative campaign ads.

I haven't seen any of Moveon.org's anti-Bush ads but was wondering whether they come across as negative campaigning against Bush.

I doubt that ads can really make that much of a difference, it's like New Coke, the ads couldn't make people like it. But I vote logically, not emotionally, so I am probably the wrong one to ask.
