I've always been baffled by my impression that literary people are often liberal to very left wing. A very few, such as James Kilpatrick and William Buckley, buck this trend, but you do not hear of too many right wing English professors.

I think in general, they are escapists who prefer fiction to reality. A perfect cultural medium for liberal fantasies to flourish and perpetuate. Unfortunately, universities in general have become escapes for students who refused to grow up and face the real world, becoming professors in order to avoid it.
