I just use the Maxtor as a 'holding bin' for duplicates of documents and to keep my photo files. I just create a new folder with the date and drop the My Documents folder into it....when I feel it is time to do it.

If you have a disk crash

Which disk...The main one in the laptop or the USB Maxtor?

If my laptop disk goes...I have copies of stuff I need on the Maxtor. I don't worry at all about backing up program files, as I have the CD's and downloads to reinstall with.

If the Maxtor dies....Well, I've burnt CD's of the non-replacable stuff....and when I get enough of other files to fill a CD I burn another.

Now, whether I can find the file in a timely manner in the case of a disaster....is another story. I have a 'large' pile of CD's.
