Cambodia was a stable country until we started 'defending' them. The Khmer Rouge may not have been able to take over if we'd left them alone, because the country had a stable, well-liked leader and government.

The Vietnamese did not support the Khmer Rouge's extreme 'utopian' society, and finally were the ones that brought an end to their nightmare. The communist Vietnamese did not impose the same brutality on the South when they took over.
