What it is about -- Political Opportunism.

In a 2002 conversation, Kerry told me he thought it would be doubly advantageous that "I fought in Vietnam, and I also fought against the Vietnam War," apparently not recognizing that some would see far too much political calculation in such a bifurcated record. -- David Broder

It is becoming increasingly clear that Kerry had political aspirations that brought him to his Vietnam service. He enlisted ONLY after being refused a deferrment (this was typical at the time -- since enlisted soldiers had more flexibility than draftees; once you saw you were going to be drafted it was in your interest to go ahead and enlist).

Kerry had this figured out. Go hang out far away from the action. Then, put in four months in a combat zone, try to stay clear of danger, get your 3 Purple Hearts under bogus circumstances, get the hell out of dodge. Come back, be anti-war, build a following, further your political career.

I give him an "A" for ambition. An "F" for integrity, though.
