I also love the next line Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;

I've met five Chiefs of the US Forest Service, three of them while standing at the urinal. Kipling always comes to mind at such times. (The Chief is the highest ranking officer in the agency, and reports to a deputy secretary of agriculture). The highest ranking politician I've met was a governor and a US Representative or two. They too are unable to avoid standing at the fountain with common folk.

Here's one of my favorite poems, from memory. I doubt you know him; he's probably dead now, but I've loved his poems since I was in the seventh grade. I had the honor of meeting him once at his home.

The Acid Test -- by Paul Croy

Take a man, if you'd know him well,
To a lean-to of bark and poles;
Sleep on the ground and eat plain grub,
And cook on a bed of coals.

You'll come to know what he really is,
Not just what he seems to be;
You'll plumb the depths that are camouflaged
By his personality.

If the weather's bad and the bedding's damp,
And the grub tastes of kerosene;
If he doesn't kick, and he wants to stay--
But wait!--is your own slate clean?
