What you're talking about was a major counter attack during a World War. I think there are MAJOR differences

A counterattack that caught the American army completely by suprise, unforeseen, no plans to deal with it, many dead (far more than the Iraq war totals at this time), almost a major disaster on the Western front.

If the press had behaved then like they behave now, they would have been demanding a negotiated end to the war and the resignations of all the generals in the theatre.
