Friday Second Free Practice - Belgian GP

Friday August 27th, 2004

By Will Gray

Finn Kimi Raikkonen topped the times in the second practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix on Friday as World Champion Michael Schumacher failed to find his stunning form on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

McLaren-Mercedes driver Raikkonen set a time of 1:44.701 to finish 0.314 seconds ahead of British BAR-Honda driver Jenson Button with Schumacher 0.436 seconds down in third place.

Ryan Briscoe caused the session to be stopped after just 16 minutes when he lost control of his Toyota heading into the notorious Eau Rouge corner but escaped injury after destroying his car.

Briton Anthony Davidson, the pace-setter in the earlier session, finished fourth fastest with his BAR teammateTakuma Sato completing an impressive session for the team in fifth place.

Scot David Coulthard showed McLaren's strength when he finished sixth fastest ahead of the lead Williams-BMW of Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, who finished more than a tenth faster than tenth-placed Colombian teammate Juan Pablo Montoya.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, who is the only man who can stop Schumacher winning the title this weekend, finished eighth fastest for Ferrari with Spaniard Fernando Alonso ninth in the lead Renault.

Schumacher spun at turn 14, just before Stavelot, mid way through the session when he lost the back of his car and put the rear tyres onto the gravel but he was able to continue back to the pits unharmed.
