I agree that the prospects of him regrouping once again are awful. However, there are specific Islamic doctrines that obligate Muslims to take up arms if a place of prayer is under attack. This is one of the most holy places for Shi'ites to pray and today is a day of congregational prayer. It could have gone much worse.

I would rather have Al-Sadr out in the open right now, even though he is bound to attempt a new insurgency. At least we can keep an eye on him, and he has lost momentum that he may never regain.
