That article complains about multiple versions of the citations in the Navy records. Is that Kerry's fault, or the Navy's? There seems to be disagreement as to the significance of this:
"Experts point out that even the official military records get screwed up. Milavic is trying to get mistakes in his own DD214 file corrected. In his opinion, 'these entries are not prima facie evidence of lying or unethical behavior on the part of Kerry or anyone else with screwed-up DD214s.'
"Burkett, who has spent years working with the FBI, Department of Justice and all of the military services uncovering fraudulent files in the official records, is less charitable: 'The multiple citations and variations in the official record are reason for suspicion in itself, even disregarding the current swift boat veterans' controversy.'"
By referring to the first opinion as "charitable," the writer just threw his objectivity out the window.
The article also complains about the Navy's only releasing six pages of a file containing at least a hundred pages. If he wants to know why, maybe he should ask the Navy. The Navy records posted on Kerry's Website run to 153 pages.

The article also contained the following:
"What could that more than 100 pages contain? Questions have been raised about President Bush's drill attendance in the reserves, but Bush received his honorable discharge on schedule. Kerry, who should have been discharged from the Navy about the same time -- July 1, 1972 -- wasn't given the discharge he has on his campaign Web site until July 13, 1978. What delayed the discharge for six years? This raises serious questions about Kerry's performance while in the reserves that are far more potentially damaging than those raised against Bush."
One of the documents on Kerry's Website gave him the option of either requesting to continue in the Ready Reserve, or being transferring to the Standby Reserve - Inactive. Dated 1 March 1972, it states, in part::
"2. In line with this legislation, regulations provide that each member of the Ready Reserve who has fulfilled his statutory military obligation be afforded an opportunity to execute a written request to remain in the Ready Reserve. Reference (a) requires that members of the Ready Reserve whose current agreements will soon expire be afforded the same opportunity. Those who decline the opportunity to execute an agreement on the occasion of completion of their statutory military service, or expiration of a current agreement will be transferred to the Standby Reserve-Inactive (USNR-S2)."
"4. A review of your service record indicates that your membership in the Ready Reserve will soon expire..."

A summary of Kerry's service record compiled by the Navy Office of Legal Counsel in 1985 shows that Kerry was indeed transferred to Standby Reserve - Inactive on 1 July 1972.

It would really be helpful if these idiot writers would actually READ the documents that have been released. |
