Kerry enlisted in the US Navy Reserves as a Reservist... UW, as I recall, a Navy Officer who comes in from college is always a "USNR." Annapolis grads are automatically "USN," but the others have to be picked up by the Navy. Kerry went to OCS from Yale, was commissioned "USNR," and then went into the inactive reserves after Vietnam.
