He wasn't thinking. It looks like his whole team wasn't thinking. If they's stuck to "I went, he didn't, that's all", they would have had a hand that could consistently score points. Instead, they overplayed. Tactical error. Modesty would have been particularly well advised as Kerry knew he had been making up a bunch of war stories about his service for years (Christmas in Cambodia, etc). But after 20 years of getting away with it in the Senate, he thought he was set for life. But what else did he have to run on? A consistently dovish and quite mediocre Senate career?
