Yes, it's an old article by "news" standards, but the back-story on the Larry Franklin reports is that he's been under investigation for a long, long time.

I realize that Occam's Razor suggests that the timing of the story favors the Democrats -- after all, it's right before the Republican National Convention, and reflects badly on Bush because it reflects badly on the Neocons and the reasons for going to war in Iraq.

But my sense is that it will actually be buried by the RNC news.

Well, you know my obsession with the intelligence that lead to the reports of WMD. Bush is going to have to deal with that sooner or later and so far he's been like Teflon.

Reminds me of Reagan and Iran-Contra, even Carter and the Shah of Iran. Unless Americans are directly affected, they don't seem to be able to follow events in the Middle East, and the ones who do tend to run down false alleys that lead nowhere.

I thought this would be a big story because it matters to me, which is silly.
