From what I remember of the initial agreement- the statement you have concerning MSFT being able to make any changes it wants is true. It is also true for other competitors. When I heard of it, I could not believe the oversight. I figured MSFT will do with JAVA what it did with Borland's and tools and languages. It is this loophole that I believe is driving SUN's effort to be appointed the governing body\standard arbitrater (or what ever the correct term is) for the JAVA language.
