As you know, I think the French ban on school girls wearing hijab is, on balance, a violation of fundamental human rights. Not to mention an egregious intrusion of state power into areas it should not regulate.

It would be very sad if the French journalists agreed with me, because I don't think Chirac has the power to back down even if he wanted to. The law was passed by the French national legislature. So they're goners unless someone persuades the kidnappers to change their minds.
