Not a single major rightwing leader has ever served in combat. Most avoided combat with their entire hearts and minds. The worst of the bunch is Bush who to this day insists he was a jet fighter pilot but was drummed out of the Air Guard then disappeared and went AWOL, probably because of drug use but also just to avoid service and danger.
