FYI the political apparatus of South Vietnam was more than likely one of most corrupt of any political makeup there ever was.

So why did we owe them protection from anyone?

The US got involved in Vietnam because of the 'herd' mentality, which was driven by the remnants of the Joe McCarthy era. Actually had Repubs been in power the war would have been less likely, but alas the last thing the poor Dems wanted to be accused of was to be soft on them thar Commies. In that time there was one behind every other tree. Of course they were all bad, just like Moslems are today.
