I've never really liked the Olympics' team sports .....

..... until this year. They seemed to me, in the past, to promote the nationalism of the Cold War.

But now I'm seeing them as a way to showcase the development of "minor" sports, particularly for women: soccer, volleyball, softball, basketball, field hockey, and water polo.

I went to NBCOlympics.com last night and read the bio of the Argentine woman (Luciana Aymar) who scored the only goal in Argentina's bronze medal field hockey victory the other day. It was inspiring. It really made me see how important a stage the Olympics are for many women. The Olympics are almost like an international Title IX. It's great.

I'm not much of a fan of "team" sports that are essentially individual sports: team gymnastics and track and swimming relays. Those seem to me to be remnants of the Cold War. But that 4x100 men's freestyle relay in swimming where Keller (U.S.) touched out Thorpe (Australia) was so cool. Oh well.

I'm rambling. It's late. But I thought I'd stop by. Later, I'll comment on the gymnastics judging and Paul Hamm. In case, of course, anybody's interested. <g>
