Paul Hamm got the medal ... Amen ...

.......... I remember in 1985 when the Kansas City Royals won Game 6 of the World Series because of a horrible call at first base. The St. Louis Cardinals went nuts. They were so distraught that they lost the Series the next day.

The video replay was clear that the call cost the Cardinals the game. There was no demand by the Cardinals that the game's outcome be changed and that Game 7 be cancelled.

There were all kinds of flaws in the judging of the Olympics, particularly in the gymnastics. Did you see the judging of that great Russian gymnast, Alexei Nemov, in his high bar routine (a few days after the all-around competition that is the focus of the controversy) that caused the booing and the delay for Paul Hamm? Have we heard Nemov complain? No. That was one of the finest high bar routines I've ever seen.

My only objection is that Hamm is not being gracious. He has never once said that the judging might have been poor. He hasn't seen fit to observe that Nemov's routine, for example, was great and underscored. All he has said is that he has been made to feel bad and that it was difficult for him to wait while the crowd booed Nemov's score. All in all, his response to the judging controversy has been rather self-centered.

I'll tell you, though. Hamm's comeback from blowing the vault in the all-around competition was spectacular. He should wear that gold medal with pride. The president of the International Gymnastics Federation putting the onus on Hamm was ridiculous and Peter Uberroth's response was right on target. The whole episode was a joke.
