There was an interesting show on PBS the other night about the French ban. It featured a bright girl who wanted to be a doctor. Her principal worked out a compromise with her where she wore a bandana at school to cover her hair. She wasn't satisfied with that but was going along for the sake of her education.

One thing about this that is interesting to me is the confusion between the requirement and the design in this practice. If the requirement is to cover one's hair, then one should be able to cover it equally well with a babushka or a toboggan cap. There is a cultural variety of head coverings even among muslims. The insistence on a particular style of head covering is, therefore, political.

In that show, btw, one of the narrators was a totally assimilated young muslim woman. Made for an interesting contrast.
