By escalating Vietnam, Johnson and Nixon turned it from a reasonable bulwark against communism into a quasi WWIII drawing in the Soviets and Chinese, all fighting in that poor beautiful 3rd world country which got blown to hell. 56,000 Americans died. And for what? Blows the mind to think about it. Iraq has "only" cost 1000. How wrong can a war get? So wasn't Kerry 100% right to expose the dark secrets of that war and thereby help disgust the public with it and force Nixon to end it sooner rather than later?
