More a matter of conformity, I'd say. Kids like to conform...

I take your point about kids and conformity. I wasn't thinking about the kids. I wouldn't expect any teenager to say, "gee, the whole idea is to cover our hair so we can make this work for both sides by simply covering our hair with a beret or a snood or whatever cool hat we choose." It's up to the adults to recognize the unnecessary convergence of function and traditional style. If they don't, then it's political.

Regarding the headgear worn locally, it seems to me that style should yield a bit to function. I've seen so many checkers, for example, having to move their hands away from their work to push their scarves back on their shoulders. I've seen high school girls trying to play racquetball in gym class wearing those things. Makes no sense to me. I grew up in a subculture of babushkas. At least babushkas are tied under the chin and stay in place better. You can go for hours without having to tug at a babushka. I keep wanting to suggest to store clerks swatting at stray scarf ends that they just tie them. But I haven't. Yet.

I would be less exercised over this if there were one official muslim head covering, but there isn't. Styles vary from one culture to another. So there's no reason why they can't be varied further.
