I grew up in a subculture of babushkas.

When I was young, to go to Catholic church you had to cover your head if you were female.

A friend of mine tells a story about his mother who as an emergency head covering during a family emergency grabbed a dusting cloth and put that on her head!

For us, it was lace mantillas or what I would call babushkas. It was Jackie Kennedy who made head coverings in church glamourous.
