Major arrests... A suspected militant accused of playing a role in two failed assassination attempts on President Muhsarraf was arrested from a remote village in NWFP on Sunday, security sources said. The suspect, identified as Umer Rehman, was arrested by police along with his father Muhammad Rahim and a guest in Shawar village of Upper Matta on Sunday morning, sources said. Police seized weapons, explosives and communication equipment in the raid. Locals said Rahim and his son Rehman’s activities were not suspicious. It was not clear if both men were linked to local jihadi outfits or had any association with Al Qaeda. Sources said the arrest of an unidentified guest from their house was an “important” development, adding that the village was under surveillance. President Musharraf escaped unhurt in both attacks in December 2003, when assassins tried to blow up his motorcade near Islamabad. The first attack didn’t injure anybody, but 17 people died in the second. Rahman’s arrest came 10 days after the government published photos of six terrorist suspects - including Abu Faraj Al Libbi - a Libyan accused by Musharraf of being behind the assassination attempts. Rehman’s photo was not among those distributed.
