Bush claims credit for Indo-Pak dialogue

WASHINGTON: The White House posted a record of achievements by President George W Bush on its website on Saturday. Of the 19 chapters the record contains, one titled ‘averting conflicts’ claims that “in 2002, US diplomatic intervention helped defuse a possible nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan”.

It states, “President George W Bush’s first term has been among the most consequential and successful in modern times.” The chapter on ‘waging and winning the war on terror’, under subtitle ‘recruiting new allies in the war on terror,’ the record says, “Three years ago, Pakistan was one of the few countries in the world that recognised the Taliban regime, and Al Qaeda was active and recruiting in Pakistan without serious opposition. Today, the US and Pakistan are working closely in the fight against terror, and Pakistani forces are rounding up terrorists along the nation’s western border.” American and British intelligence officers, the record states, uncovered and shut down “a sophisticated black market network” headed by Dr AQ Khan who is accused of involvement in proliferation.

The report also says that through the US president’s initiative, Japan, South Korea, China, and Russia were brought to the table for discussions with North Korea on ending Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme. This multilateral approach has increased pressure on Pyongyang to eliminate its nuclear weapons program.

In 2003, US diplomatic and military leadership averted a greater conflict in Liberia. The president approved the use of the American military to support an African security force in Liberia; helped ensure a peaceful transition of power; and is now providing much-needed resources to Liberia. In respect of arms control, the report says President Bush signed a treaty with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to reduce nuclear stockpiles by two-thirds over 10 years. The United States and its allies obtained a commitment from Libya to abandon its chemical and nuclear weapons programs. The United States and its allies interrupted a production network of weapons parts for Libya, Iran, and North Korea.

President Bush also listed a number of achievements on the social level, such as reduction in crime and discrimination. “As President, I am interested in what is constitutional, and I am interested in what works. The days of discriminating against religious institutions, simply because they are religious, must come to an end,” he said. app
