Thanks for the interesting story. A friend of mine told me about it just 5 minutes before I received your SI post. What a coincidence!

I have read similar reports before. One involved an old woman who died somewhere in Arizona. As her daughter who lived with her could not afford the burial expenses, she merely covered her body in bed with a blanket. Overtime, in the hot and dry atmosphere of Arizona, the body became desiccated (dried-out) like a mummy.

I have also read about a 4-year old kid who went on feeding himself from the food in the fridge after his mother was dead for nearly a week. The poor kid didn't know his Mom had passed away. He simply thought she was asleep and, as he had been taught not to bother her when she was asleep, he didn't. Her death was discovered by a relative who came over after her telephone calls went unanswered.

Generally when a person dies, decomposition sets in and produces foul smells that draw people's attention to the fact. But in some cases, decomposition does not occur. I don't quite understand this. But it had been observed that the corpses of old folks who had been talking lots of antibiotics for a long period do not decompose easily. (They found this to be the case when cemeteries were exhumed.) Apparently the dead bodies were so "saturated" with antibiotocs that the bacteria responsible for decomposition won't have a chance to do its work for may be indefinitely.
