The Vacuum cleaner might matter more than you imagine...

I'm pleased that you appreciated my posting.
As you might have seen, Nicholas Petreley in NC world published the same ideas, a litlle later.

Of course, a vacuum cleaner is only an example for the numerous machines in household and dayly life.
My idea (earlier put by for instance -sorry- Novell) is that in the future every machine will not only have a processor (that's hardly future) but also it will be connected to a global network to updat its software.
Imagine your microwave oven being able to determine the initial temperature and weight of the product you put into it, you indicate the type of product and how you like it and the processor inside the microwave oven calculates what he has to do with it and controls the process. This software can be updated any moment with new recepies and products (marketing opportunity for food industry!).
And if it is Java it is simple too.
The same idea for your VCR. Did you perhaps notice that the VCR you bought lately was available wih better software three months later? Wouldn't it be nice to have the latest version loaded automatically? Think of mapping table for names of stations to the frequency.
Same goes for your car: it can have less fuel comsumption, more power, more userfriendlyness, more safety by better software any minute, if the software can be loaded from the global network.

There are far more machines in household and dayly life than there are - or ever will be - PC's or NC's. So that's a real interesting market. I beleieve the machines will be sold with a contract for software upgrades. So the software maker could be paid in advance - interesting isn't it?

So the Vacuum cleaner might matter more than you imagine...
Only, unfortunately that will not be tomorrow.

Eveline
