HIROSHIMA, Japan -- Despite a strong first quarter, Mazda Motor Corp. fears the rising cost of materials it uses to build cars could cap its earnings this fiscal year, the company's top executive said.

.......
But President Hisakazu Imaki warned that materials costs in the second half may rise more than 3% to 5% from a year earlier, eating into profit margins and making an upward earnings surprise for Mazda unlikely anytime soon.
...
"Costs of raw materials are rising sharply. ... That's having a major impact on our overall materials costs," Mr. Imaki said.
