German retail sector to see up to 20,000 job cuts in 2004

COLOGNE, Germany (AFX) - The retail trade will cut between 15,000-20,000 jobs this year in a reaction to the economic crisis affecting the sector, said Retail Trade Federation (HDE) spokesman Hubertus Pellengah. Pellengah said in an interview with Polish daily Express that the job cuts will affect the delivery sector more than sales staff. The federation does not foresee any real growth in Germany's retail trade until next year, after some 50,000 jobs were cut last year, a post-war record
