I think the best option would have been to hold Saigon and forget the rest.
Recently I heard that the Viet Cong nearly surrended for
peace, but they saw public opinion in the US get weak, so they stuck it out.

The reason why the public wanted out was because of the draft. And that is a good reason - most 18 year olds are not combat ready right off the street.
