Irish Catholic mother cured me of that disease .....

.......... Those Church-going Catholics are a huge part of Bush's righteous following.

My father was raised one of those Protestant religions (Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Methodist--you know, basically Catholic but you can get divorced) and never attended services when he was growing up. But my mother, who was born in Ireland and once thought John Kennedy was the second coming of Jesus Christ, got him to convert to Catholicism in his 60s or 70s. Now they both go to Church and, I think, they both voted for Bush last time. My mother still fends off attacks on Bush by my brother ("JimWillie CB"). My father is a bit melancholoy about Bush.

The main national base of the Republican Party now is those who attend some kind of religious service once a week. It's crazy.
