This and the couple of posts before it in the Loral discussion cover the relationship between the various contractors for the Globalstar system. Globalstar staff function independently of other companies, including Loral and while there are obviously serious family discussions over shares of cakes, it seems that there shouldn't be too much burglarizing of GSTRF shareholders.

They are posts well worth reading.

My proportions of Globalstar:Loral remain at 100% Globalstar. I don't think Loral can strip mine the GSTRF shareholders even though they own 38% and get all the satellite contracts. In one of the posts, GSTRF and Globalstar are confused!! Once again, GSTRF is Globalstar Telecommunications Limited which is a holding company owning only 20% of Globalstar LP. Never forget this.

Incidentally, some people are of the opinion that "...Globalstar had about one year headstart with their stock but have not launched any satellites". The timing of the IPOs is irrelevant! Remember that Globalstar as an idea got going about 1990 whereas Iridium started about 1986! Wow, Globalstar has already caught up on 4 years. Meanwhile, unfortunately for Iridium, time and technology marched on after 1986 and CDMA became a real possibility, too late for Iridium who had to launch with obsolete technology. That is the price of long lead times in fast moving fields. Luckily for Globalstar, and it was luck, the confluence of technology seems to be perfectly timed for their plans.

There is also opinion that "Iridium is technically superior". Actually, CDMA, the Globalstar air interface is technically superior to TDMA which Iridium is using. Other aspects of Globalstar are technically superior too. Don't be misled into thinking that satellite switching, which is very technically impressive, makes it a technically superior system.

They also think that "Iridium is backed by Motorola which has more than just a little more pull than Loral." Well, we will see how much Motorola intends to back Iridium won't we. I'm looking forwards to Iridium financing the second constellation of Iridium. All we hear though is that they will launch the technically inferior CDMA based M-Star system. Motorola is under pressure! Size in itself is not sufficient.
