There are plenty of crummy businesses, like timeshare sleazeballs, fly- by- night repair jocks, consultant swamis, and marginal understocked, overpriced sundries stores serving a captive population in the slums. There are plenty of effective government programs. For example, I was on jury duty recently, and was impressed with the efficiency and courtesy of the staff. Similarly, my dealings with police have generally been good, and I have seen major improvements in the MVA in my lifetime. So, I would rather someone have an honest job renewing licenses than a pact- with- the- devil job of timeshare salesman. Yes, in general private investment is better, but public services can be not only useful, but well- provided, and private companies can survive parasitically.........
