Kerry must have had guts to troll the Mekong Delta's spider web of rivers and narrow canals knowing that Viet Cong like himself were waiting to pick him off.

This is the part that gets me. The article leaves out Kerry's complaints about the change of mission from coastal patrol to inland waterway patrol. That shows a lot of "guts". His boat also ran away one time too many, especially when running instead of helping PCF-3.
