My husband refers to low level "gate-keepers" in such
organizations as "mattress mice."

We've all encountered them.

The people who have no power or clout in real life,
let alone any true ability to wield power appropriately,
but somehow they get a little power, whether real or perceived, by virtue of their jobs.

And they will certainly lord it over those who
are unfortunate enough to need to get past the
gate keeper to get the desired service or goods.

Like waiting in line at the grocery store only to have
the register in your line suddenly closed at the last second.

Or getting into the "wrong" line at the DMV, so
that you have to start over.

Or trying to return merchandise without having
all the proper forms.

Or still waiting to see the doctor for your 2 pm appointment at
3:10 pm, and getting some attitude from the receptionist when you inquire.

Or having to tell the same tele-marketer at least 4 times
to take you off the d@mn list.

I could go on, of course<g>
