I see that the Republican platform not only opposes gay marriage, but opposes State recognition of other forms of same-sex unions. And also calls for amending the Constitution to outlaw abortion -- that is, to compel American citizens to gestate a fertilized egg to term (for religious reasons not shared by most of those females being subjected to enforced gestation). Note that the gays barred from civil union arrangements would be barred based on religious beliefs they do not share.
