Iraq War hero Gen. Tommy Franks says he has never endorsed a candidate for president until now.

But the former general told Fox News' Sean Hannity that he is unequivovally endorsing President Bush for re-electioon.

Story Continues Below

As a military man Franks steered clear of politics and told Hannity he had never even thought about endorsing any presidential candidate.

But Franks said there was little doubt in his mind that George W. Bush is the best man to lead America at this critical time.

Franks said he had seen President Bush when times were hard, and these experiences led him to break his long-standing habit of not endorsing presidential candidates.

Franks told Hannity: "What we [my wife and I] wrestled with was trying to think our way through how close are we to the end of this threat to our nation from terrorism, and I've convinced myself that we're in this for the long haul; this is not going to be over tomorrow. And so I've thought about things like consistency. I've thought about things like persistency. I've thought about unswerving, unwavering character. And the longer I thought, the more convinced we became that we had to speak up."

He then told Sean Hannity why he is endorsing President Bush.

"Can you imagine shouldering the burden of 9/11 as a new president of the United States and taking the decisions that he had to take? I have high respect for that ... there has been no backup in this president."

"The more that I thought about George W. Bush and the more I thought about this critical time in American history, the more convinced I became that I had an obligation to speak up."

He has now spoken up for George W. Bush and our country.
