"Were we in a position to interdict the flights?"

YES!

We had total control of all airspace over Afghanistan, and the Northern alliance were within 24 hours of capturing the airfield where this nest of Taliban and their supporters/ financiers (including high-ranking Pakistani Generals) had gathered... indeed, the N.A. was 'chomping at the bit' to capture this crowd --- they knew how important a haul it was.

Nothing could fly without us knowing about it (and shooting it down.)

Orders came from the 'top' (CIA or WH, presumably) to our airforce to clear a route for those flights (several heavy cargo flights, all before dawn) to Pakistan... and they vanished, just like that.

I realized right then, once this potential coup de grace to al Qaeda had been thwarted by politics, that this war was going to drag on for a very long time.
