The business cycle arises due to the speculative nature of investment. Not everyone can win, and periodically, the losers are cleared out. Although there are always losers, when an unusual number fail or have to cut back to avoid failing, the ripple effect pulls us into recession. This may be the best we can do, but it is, in itself, inefficient.

The question is, isn't the periodic crisis of governmental fiscal and monetary management similar to the business cycle, forcing a correction through the Reality Principle, and not much more inefficient than a bust after a period of easy money in the private economy?
