It depends on what you mean by "hide". Given that a Cat 5 can have a storm surge of more than 20 feet, if you are at elevation of 3 feet with a beautiful view of the bay, almost anyplace else looks good if you are at ground zero. Once you are far enough away to where the salt water can't get you, the deadliness of a hurricane drops off a lot. You lose your roof or get nailed by a falling tree or experience a tornado, but those are odds that can rationally be played. Not storm surge.

Of course, there are always those who go out and trim trees and walk dogs when the eye moves over. They are like the ones who think "that water doesn't look too deep to drive through". Potential Darwin Award winners...
