And I think this is dead wrong: ..Palestine and Israel. If he had succeeded, I doubt we would be seeing the Iraq quagmire today or even have had experienced 9/11.

If there were no Israel/Palestine conflict, there still would have been an Iranian revolution, a Soviet invasion of
Afghanistan with US and Pakistani support for those resisting the Soviets, Saddam would still have been an aggressive war-mongering threat to the region, Iran and Iraq would still have fought a war, Saddam would still have invaded Kuwait, we would have pushed him out, he'd want WMD's to realize his imperial neo-Babylonian empire ambitions, etc. etc. In other words, without the Israel/Palestine conflict the ME would be pretty much the same - one less conflict but all the others.
