We could simply post the picks and charities as we do now and, at the end of the year, prompt for self-determined results...e.g., "anyone who can beat (for example) 38%, please identify yourself, your calculated return and give the link to your original post."

The 'host' would then be responsible for double checking the math.

During the year, say every quarter, we could ask participants to state their progress to date.

No need to Yahoo.
