"If he was a bastion of liberalism"

As Z pointed out, that is Phil Gramm.

Umm, sorry. I was being extremely sarcastic. A&M, at least at the undergraduate level, is anything but a bastion of liberalism. It is a hotbed of libetarianism of the most stupid form. Anybody who thinks that US universities are, by definition, liberal, has never been here. The Young Conservatives, an active group here, are totally redundant. Most of the undergraduates agree with them. And at least a lot of the profs agree with them. My wife and I joined a group which arranged meetings between profs and students. The profs who joined were much more to the right than I am. Who really takes theWashington Times as a serious news source? Okay, other than DR?

Now on the graduate level it is different. For one, the students aren't as unrelentingly American, white and male. But that is a totally different story...

And yeah, you probably can't understand Texans. Contradiction and adaptation is central to our psyche. It comes from living in an environment that tries to kill you at every turn. Not like the Disneyisque environment that you are used to. My wife felt that fire ants and killer bees were unfair. I consider them part of life...
