Awesome quicktime movies of Charlie are on this page:

For those of you who are not in Florida, it gives you an idea of the breadth of a storm. Frances is larger. Charlie was enough for me but I know we will feel Frances effects this weekend.

I could not have survived with out my battery operated fans during Charlie. I bought them at Brookstone. They used about 8 D batteries per day but kept the air moving pretty well. Just a hint, if you can get to one before they close. Call first and purchase them over the phone for pick up. Save a trip in case they are out.

I have written here before that homes built Post-Andrew and the ones with the newest building code are surviving very well, even on beachfront. I stood looking out a highrise and the new homes stood out for their lack of damage.

The lack of fully mature trees at these new homes also figures well into their survival. I lost several 40' trees and could hear them pounding the ground as they succumbed. The rose buds on my bush survived as well as delicate datura blossoms. Nature is awesome.

My lanai looks at a huge banyan tree with a 90' wide canopy. When the 'cane passed, I walked out to look at the damage and within ithe banyan's branches were hundred of birds: egrets, heron, roseate spoonbills, ahingahs and ducks. An eagle or two. The tree had provided them shelter. I thought, here's the reason that Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and others made Fort Myers their winter home. Audubon would come by to sketch.
