Peter, Evans published the first intracellular receptor (glucocoticoid receptor) in 1985. He became LGND's exclusive consulatant in 1988, but the license agreement with Salk included earlier filings that they had done on Evan's part. Since you worked in a lab studying the glucocoricoid receptor, you are pprobably already familiar with the many sequenced and published members of that huge multi-gene family.
Ron Evans also discovered Panretin (9-cis retinoic acid), the first non-polypeptide hormone to be discovered in 25 years. They also worked on RXRs and discovered that they were heterdimeric partners for many other non-polypeptide hormones suchg as PPARs (the target of the blockbuster diabetes drug, Rezulin. In 1992 Ron Evans showed that RXRs and RRARs formed heteroduplexs. Just under a year ago, LGND presented data (at Bear Stearns) showing that a rexinoid (retinoid specific for RXRs) could prevent breast cancer and overcome the underlying cause of type II diabetes, insulin reistance. In March their Nature paper not only showed that two different rexinoids (Targretin and ALRT268) could dramactically reduce glucose, insulin , and triglyceride levels in mouse models of diabetes (db/db) and obesity (ob/ob), but both rexinoids could synergize with a second generation TZD (Rezulin is a first generation TZD).
