Cut and Run? What was Vietnam? Was that cutting and running or out and out LOSING? That was a loss for the US, that wasn't cutting and running. It was identifying that the situation wasn't winnable and that we were doing more harm (mostly to us) than good. We may HAVE NO CHOICE. That's the entire point. It's not cutting and running but being backed into a dangerous corner with limited options by the singular incompetence of BUSH, RUMMY, RICE, CHENEY, TENET et al. No, having people within our midst or on our side has nothing to do with action or inaction. It has to be with the recognition that we have to be better. That lowering ourselves (Abu Ghraib) out of anger, belligerence or stupidity makes out situation just that much more dangerous. We can say very publicly that we have criminals and terrorists within our midst AND come out the better for it. We are supposedly setting some kind of democratic standard for the ME. Right now, the ME is saying that we're occupiers ignoring the sovereign national government and that we should leave. We may HAVE NO CHOICE in the future as we are out of men, ammo, equipment of all kinds and money.
